Way back when this was a land of nomads; they hunted game from the woods and fished trout from the streams. Later nomad colonies inhabited caves alongside the river. Those first cavemen were artists. They decorated the walls of their new habitat with paintings of wild animals. These are the oldest cave paintings in the world (much older than Lascaux f.i.). The French secretary of State in charge of natural monuments was allowed to enter the Grotte Chauvet, shortly after discovery. When she came back out she said with tears in her eyes : “it’s as if they just stepped out for a while and will be back any moment”. The paintings in the Grotte Chauvet are dated at 32 to 35000 years BC. A replica can be seen in the recently opened Chauvet Museum in Vallon Pont d'Arc
The tourist infrastructure is of high level and a few towns will supply all you might need. But nothing here will remind you of the overpopulated industrialized world elsewhere. The Ardeche knows a totally different here and now. Vacationing in the Ardeche is a way of going back in time. That is the Ardeche of endless views and panoramas, unlimited horizons, fields full of nodding sunflowers, quiet country roads where you can smell the lavender, small hamlets glued to green sloped hills, jeu de boules courts under plane trees, still valleys with each its own little river that flows there quietly, just for you.
In the middle of the charming Auzon Valley, where one finds a wealth of flowers and herbs in all seasons but particularly in Spring, you will find the village of Lussas, known for its fruit farms. Strawberries, peaches, apricots, apples, pears and wine grapes.
Widely known are our Burlat cherry trees,
with their big dark red juicy fruits.
In the campsite we have three of those trees,
the cherries of which are intensively picked
by our guests.
Other fruits you will find on the campground are, from April through November : yellow cherry plum, plums, figs, walnuts, hazelnuts, quinces, raspberries, almonds and also mushrooms.
And grapes of course, which come in rich varieties, and thus wine, much wine. You can buy it anywhere, excellent yet cheap.
Birds to be seen on ludocamping :
